"The chills, thrills, and tears we experience from music are the result of having our expectations artfully manipulated." —Daniel Levitin
As Sound Becomes Music is a series of pieces exploring the interplay between acoustic patterns and internal anticipation. Patterns in the form of pitch, rhythm, and phrasing are processed by the brain as mental schemas, which create expectations of resolution and repetition. Altering these patterns in unexpected ways excites the brain's reward and novelty circuits. In these works, I combine found, instrumental, and synthesized sounds—looped, layered, and scattered—to create and disrupt the expectations of schemas.
